Speaker Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou Announces Governance Focused on Continuity, Rigor, and Respect for Public Property

The new Speaker of the National Assembly of Benin, Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou, presided over the traditional flag-raising ceremony on the morning of Monday, February 9, 2026, a ceremony his predecessor, Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou, had made a tradition for parliamentary staff. After the playing of the three verses of "L'Aube Nouvelle" (The New Dawn), Benin's national anthem, Speaker Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou addressed all the staff, saying: "One might think this is a new day. But the State is a continuum. And the parliamentary administration is also a continuum. Taking this microphone in this place, following in the footsteps of the great Speaker of the National Assembly, Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou, I do not consider it something new. Perhaps the voice is new." But it is the same National Assembly, the same presidency of the National Assembly. And I would ask each and every one of you to consider that the structures remain the same, that the rigor with which you supported President Vlavonou must be maintained; that the dedication to work must be maintained; that the respect for public property must be maintained. And I want to assure you, on behalf of the members of the bureau I chair, of our solidarity, our close relationship, and that the governance of the National Assembly will be carried out with the same rigor as during President Vlavonou's time.”

Continuing his remarks, President Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou stated that the ceremonies for raising the national flag, the presence and presentation of the national colors, are a moment of respect and unity in the spirit of our country.

“It is a time to reaffirm our duty to national unity. And I hope that this will continue in the same spirit with which you did so before,” he added.

He concluded by thanking everyone for their efforts in ensuring that the election of the National Assembly's leadership took place with such clarity and dignity.

"This is undoubtedly the first act of a seven-year term. I pray to God and the spirits of our ancestors that everyone remains healthy, strong, and renewed in their desire to serve the Nation so that at the end of this seven-year term, we may still be alive together to celebrate Benin even more," concluded President Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou.
